Zune Software 4.8 Update Ready For “Mango” Now Available

Microsoft has release the next version of the Zune software. “Our primary goal with this release was to make the Zune software the best companion for your “Mango” Windows Phone, so the team implemented a few new features and made a bunch of under-the-hood refinements and fixes, including several based on your feedback,” revealed Matt Akers over at Windows Phone blog.

According to Akers, Zune 4.8 offers these Windows Phone update speed improvements:

  • Progressive updates: In Zune 4.8, you only have to click the update button once for multiple updates. Once an update is finished, the software automatically checks for more and repeats the installation process until your phone is completely up to date.
  • Streamlined backup.By synching media separately from other phone content, we’ve lowered the overall time it takes to back up your phone. The backup file is also more compact, so it should take up less space on your computer.
  • Skip phone backup: If you don’t have enough room on your computer to store a phone backup file, you’ll now have the option to skip this step so you’re not blocked from updating your phone.

In addition, Zune 4.8 is available in these countries or regions:

Under-the-covers changes to improve experience in Zune 4.8 includes:

  • “48-hour movie rentals
  • Parental Controls now support M-rated (Mature) content
  • Option to hide purchase confirmation dialog for faster app checkout
  • See what apps are compatible with the Windows Phone you own,” Akers stated.
  • “To update your current version, click Settings > Software > General, and then click Check For Updates.”

You probably won’t notice too many differences in how Zune 4.8 looks: Most of the changes were designed to pave the way for the next release of Windows Phone, codenamed Mango.

If you already have a Windows Phone, you probably know that the Zune software is a key companion for your device. It allows you to:

    • Zune player – Also known as a Zune device, this is a portable music and video player (what some might simply call an “MP3 player”). It’s small and optimized for entertainment. It doesn’t make phone calls or do most of the other stuff that Windows Phones can do.
    • Zune app – This is built into the Music + Videos hub on your Windows Phone. Essentially, it turns your phone into a Zune player.
    • Zune Marketplace – This is an online store where you can get music, videos, podcasts, apps, games, and more. The store is accessible from a variety of devices, including PCs, Zune players, Xbox 360, and Windows Phone 7. Some of the stuff in Zune Marketplace is free and some costs money. Zune Marketplace is not available in all countries/regions.
    • Zune Pass – This is a music subscription service that is available through Zune Marketplace. For a monthly fee, Zune Pass subscribers can download and stream an unlimited number of songs to their phone, PC, and Zune player. Zune Pass is not available in all countries/regions.
    • Zune software – This is a free program that you install on your computer. It’s a digital media jukebox and a vital link between your phone and PC.

Here are the top three reasons why you need to install the Zune software on your computer so you can get the most out of your phone:

    1. To download stuff (such as music, videos, movies, TV shows, podcasts, apps, and games) from Zune Marketplace to your computer.
    2. To sync stuff between your PC and your phone. This includes the music, pictures, videos, movies, TV shows, and podcasts on your computer that you want to copy to your phone. And it also includes the pictures and videos you’ve taken on your phone that you want to copy to your PC.
    3. To update your phone software (to get new features, performance enhancements, and so on).
