Yahoo! is planning a feature called “Y Connect,” in the hopes of driving and tracking traffic and to make more money from advertising, The Wall Street Journal reports. Yahoo’ll create a similar tool to Facebook connect for their media publishers, web developers and other websites to integrate with. Yahoo isn’t commenting yet.
Like Facebook Connect, which launched in December 2008, Y Connect allows users to register and log into web sites by clicking on a Yahoo button. After the user logs in, their activity on the web site can be shared with Yahoo. This shared data can be used for advertising purposes or to make Yahoo’s products better.
While Yahoo would use this to target its advertising, media publishers, web developers and other websites who offer the integration would also get additional info about visitors.
