Windows Phone 7.5: Push Notifications with Secondary Tiles and Deep Toast, Integrating Bing Maps and More!

In this edition of Inside Windows Phone, Microsoft’s resident Ninja Ben Lower talk about all the things the company is doing to help student developers get started building outstanding apps and games for Windows Phone

Here are a bunch of links to the various things we talked about:

  • TouchDevelop. An amazing platform on top of Windows Phone for programming, directly ON your Windows Phone. Check out their complete website, or download the app directly.
  • XAPfest. Xapfest is a periodic training event led by Ben, in a number of different venues. You can watch a video of a XAPfest presentation here.
  • The Hawaii Project. Learn more about Project Hawaii here.
  • Sketchflow for Windows Phone. You can find this add on for Expression Blend here. Note, this does require that you have the full, purchased version of Expression Blend, but if you are a student, you can get this for free via the DreamSpark program.

One of the amazingly cool new developer features of Windows Phone 7.5, is the ability for developers to leverage the direct camera video stream within the context of their applications. In this video Alex show you how to implement this in your application, and how to also process the data in the feed before displaying it.

You can now share your private data with groups of your friends, coworkers, and those outside your work organization courtesy of a new free product, Glassboard, from social media company Sepia Labs. Users can connect with each other’s Windows Phone, Android, or iPhone. Soon users can connect from within a Silverlight part in Office 365.

Glassboard is an app for sharing privately with groups (or “boards” as we call them). With Glassboard you can message a group of people quickly & easily (looks like a text on your phone but it isn’t!), share photos and videos, and even show your location when appropriate. Everything within a board is _completely_ private. Only the board chair can invite you to a board, and there is no way for someone not invited to search or discover a board. It’s your own private corner of the Internet.”

WP7.5 provide two new powerful constructs: the ability to add secondary tiles to you applications, and the ability to have your application appropriately respond to launch parameters to deliver the end user to a specific location within your application.

In this video, Alex goes in depth on how to execute on these scenarios, all within the context of a weather application built to leverage push notification.
