Windows Phone 7.5 Out of the Box Tricks for Personalizing Your Device

Windows Phone looked fantastic right out of the box, but the following easy, built-in personalization tweaks–some of which are new in Windows Phone 7.5–will make your new phone even prettier and more fun to use:

  1. Change your colors from 10 fetching theme colors (some carriers add a couple more) to decorate your Start Tiles and accents around the phone.

Windows Phone 7.5: Change Background and foreground Color

    To change the accent color

    1. On Start, flick left to the App list, then tap Settings.
    2. Tap Theme.
    3. Tap the Accent color list.
    4. Tap the color you want to use, then wait a few seconds, or press the Back button. You’ll see the new theme color in the highlight sentence.

    To change your background theme

    1. On Start, flick left to the App list, then tap Settings.
    2. Tap Theme.
    3. Tap the Background list.
    4. Choose one of the following:
      • To make your background black, tap Dark.
      • To make your background white, tap Light.
  2. Rock your lock. Your lock screen can show the artist you’re currently listening to. And you should definitely adorn your phone’s front page with a photo that makes you happy. New in Windows Phone 7.5: you can use a picture from an online album, like a Facebook album, without downloading it to your phone first. Even someone else’s album! Learn how
  3. Mess with Start. It’s so easy to add, subtract, and rearrange Live Tiles on Start that there’s really no excuse for sticking with the layout your phone came with. And Start isn’t just an app corral.

  4. Tag Favorites in the Pictures Hub, then set the Hub background to “shuffle.” You’ll see those pics on the Favorites grid in the Hub, and they’ll also rotate through the Hub background. Coolest of all, they’ll show up as an ever-changing, animated slideshow in the Pictures Tile on Start.

  5. Link inboxes. On Windows Phone, you can link as many of your inboxes as you’d like, so you can see and respond to all of the email from those accounts from the same inbox. But if you’d prefer to keep some inboxes separate, you can do that too.

    To link inboxes

    1. On Start, tap an email account that you want to link to another account.
    2. Tap More > Link inboxes.
    3. In the Other inboxes list, tap any inboxes you want to link to this one. As you tap them, they’ll move into the This inbox list.
    4. Tap Rename linked inbox, delete the existing name, type a new name, then tap Done. The newly linked inbox Tile will appear on Start.

    To unlink inboxes

    1. On Start, tap a linked email account.
    2. Tap More > Linked inboxes.
    3. In the This inbox list, tap each account you want to unlink, and then tap Unlink. The inbox moves to the Other inboxes list.

  6. Make ringtones. Learn how
