Windows Live Hotmail Wave 4 Previewed – The next generation of personal email

Microsoft previewed the new version of Windows Live Hotmail packed with a ton of great new features. Microsoft didn’t offer a specific release deadline for Wave 4. “With new Hotmail, we’ve introduced practical innovations to help people manage the clutter & regain control of their inboxes – efficiently. What’s more, you can manage clutter not only in your Hotmail inbox, but also in your inboxes from other email services like Gmail, Yahoo! Mail Plus, or AOL, all from within Hotmail,” Dick Craddock said. Here’s a quick list of changes:

  • Take back your inbox. We help you quickly get to important messages and get rid of mail you don’t want.
  • Sweep option designed to enable users to get rid of graymail, unwanted messages that don’t really qualify for spam. While virtual broom can be used manually, Hotmail also permits customers to automate tool, but without the need to create complex rules.
  • Get more done with the mail you receive. Do more without leaving your inbox, so that you don’t have to open a bunch of browser windows just to get simple things done.
  • Active View takes a message beyond actual test, streamlining functionality such as previewing photos, and even viewing slideshows of attached images. At same time, due to integration with services including Flickr and SmugMug, these examples of functionality are also valid for links from online destinations as those mentioned above.
  • Photos: Even with popularity of photo sharing sites like Flickr, Picasa, and Facebook, most popular way to share photos is still via email, and new Hotmail has made it easy to not only share, but share a LOT of photos. Coupled with SkyDrive, you’ll soon be able to share up to 200 50mb photos in a single email (that’s 10GB!). Hotmail will manage SkyDrive uploads in background as you compose mail, so sharing photos won’t be any harder, just a lot better.
  • Office: Hotmail users share some 350 million Office documents per month, according to Walter Harp, but now you’ll be able to open and edit those attachments using Office Web Apps and SkyDrive. new online versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote, will soon be available free to anyone with Live ID, and Hotmail users will soon be able to open and view Office documents attached to Hotmail email from PC or Mac in any popular browser. You’ll go right to Office Web Apps, where you view or edit documents online, take them offline if you have Office installed.
  • One-Click Filters are called as Quick views in desktop client. new Hotmail allows you to filter them out to unread mails, mail from your contacts or from social networks. The last one isn’t available in the desktop client, but who knows maybe it’ll be when we get a Wave 4 version of that.
  • Conversation View allow to view email exchanges as a conversation.
  • View all from sender allow to see all mail you received from one sender?” just hover over their name and select “Find e-mail.”
  • Quick Views let you view emails sent with certain types of content in them.
  • Share over email. Stop hassling with attachment size limits – whether you’re sending hundreds of large photos or massive documents. View, edit, and share Microsoft Office documents even if you or the people you’re sharing with don’t have Office installed on their computers – PC or Mac.
  • Connect from your phone. Sync your email, calendar, and contacts on your mobile devices – whether you’re using a smart phone like the forthcoming Windows Phone 7, or the iPhone, or a phone that just has a simple browser.
  • Exchange ActiveSync is currently available on over 300 million phones, according to Microsoft, and the new Windows Live Hotmail enables users to make the best of their mobile devices. Hotmail Wave 4 comes with push capabilities for smartphones, allowing for the synchronization of the calendar, contacts, and tasks.
