Windows Azure Migration Scanner is a tool that scans application code and identifies potential Windows Azure migration issues needing attention.
“WAMS works by scanning source files and looking for matches against a rules file. The rules file specifies text regular expression patterns that suggest areas requiring attention. For example, if a C#/.NET application makes references to the System.Messaging namespace, that flags a warning that use of MSMQ needs to be converted to Windows Azure Queue Storage,” Microsoft explains.
While Azure Migration Scanner can’t identify all migration issues using this technique, it’ll give you a heads-up on many migration issues. Since the rules file is extensible, you can add new rules and even support new languages by adding your own definitions.
There are 3 ways to use the Azure Migration Scanner:
- WAMS Desktop Tool: wams.exe, a WPF-based desktop GUI tool
- WAMS Command Line Tool: wamscmd.exe, a console command
- WAMS Library: wamslib.dll, the WAMS library that you can invoke from your own code
