Wikimedia Raises $16 Million in Just 50 Days, Wikipedia Remain Ad-free

Wikimedia, the foundation behind Wikipedia, has reached its goal of $16 million in donations, more than doubling the $7.5 million raised in 2009. More than half a million people pitched in an average of around $22 each to support Wikipedia and its sister projects.

“Our community of volunteers is deeply honored that, in only 50 days, 500,000 people from 140 countries came together to support the only non-profit, user supported top-10 website in the world. In addition to this humbling support for the Wikimedia Foundation, our chapters around the world have raised millions of dollars from hundreds of thousands of donors of their own,” said Philippe Beaudette.

The donations are to keep “Wikipedia ad-free, and having reached its goal, Wikipedia remains the only top-10 site on the Web that is free of ads and funded entirely by donations. The best bit, though, is that even the whole donation process has a Wiki. You can see how they tested various slogans, and just how successful the “Jimmy appeal” was, compared to the other possible banners. Finally, if you’re really into this kind of thing, you can see a graph that documents the daily donations from 2007 through to the end of 2010.”

Also, that Wikipedia will celebrate its 10th birthday on January 15th.
