What Is a Microsoft Push Notification for Windows Phones?

The concept of push notifications isn’t new and is used by others in industry. With that said, Microsoft PN (MPN) service includes a cool twist that gives developers ‘power to create’ impression that their application is always connected by displaying relevant information even whilen’t running through Live Tile displayed on Start Screen. What Is a Push Notification? For developer, PN message is a means to an end. Its main purpose is to trigger user to launch your WP app. PN gives you option to send messages in form of notifications to WP device, and even if your app isn’t running at the moment the message arrives, message is handled by WP for you and presented, most of the time, to user in a predefined manner. PNs are an integral part of WP Shell and are integrated with Quick Launch area of phone’s Start experience (the main phone screen), and as an overlay on top of any running app (including any Shell screen). For end user, PNs are a visual way for the phone to tap on user’s shoulder saying – “Hey, something interesting just happened. Why don’t you take a look?” The user is unaware of how these messages arrive as long as they’re displayed correctly and within proper context: Toast notifications display as overlay messages on user’s current screen; Tile notifications drive a change to a tile shown in the Quick Launch area of the phone’s Start experience.
