Walmart Receiving Higher Share of ‘Black Friday, Thanksgiving & Cyber Monday’ Related Searches

Black FridayBlack Friday is almost upon us, the NRF predicts that 152 million people will shop over Black Friday weekend, up 10% from last. Also, Black Friday-related searches are up 17% last week as compared to the previous year and 154% from the previous week, reports Hitwiser.

According to Hitwise “Traffic to websites dedicated to Black Friday information, such as BlackFriday.info and BFads.net, also increased 15% year-over-year.”

“Wal-mart is the retailers to appear most frequently, which has also translated into Walmart.com directly capturing a higher share of Black Friday searches. For the 4 weeks ending November 12, 2011, Walmart.com received 10% of Black Friday-related terms, up 9 percentage points from the same time frame last year.”

Adding, Hitwise says, “The impact of Wal-mart’s Black Friday sale is also key to driving traffic to the Black Friday websites, where traffic jumped 152% from the previous day when Wal-Mart released information about Black Friday promotions on November 10th. Total visits to Walmart.com also increased 15% on November 10th as compared to the previous day.”

According to Yahoo! Search, searches for “Black Friday” are up 1,020% on Yahoo.com –25% of searches are coming from women ages 30-44.

Yahoo notes, people are also searching Yahoo! for information on “Why is it called Black Friday?”

Per Yahoo search report:

  • Black Friday 2011 Walmart searches on Yahoo! this month are up 31,752%, with 66% coming from women.
  • Top states searching for “Black Friday 2011 Walmart” this month on Yahoo! include: West Virginia, Kentucky, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Alabama.
  • Searches for “Target Black Friday Ad” are up 2,885% this month on Yahoo!, with 71% of searches coming from women.
  • Top states searching for “Target Black Friday Ad” include: Texas, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio and Virginia.
  • Searches this week for Cyber Monday are up 179%, of 58% are coming from women.
  • Top states searching for Cyber Monday include: California, Virginia, Florida, New York, and Georgia.
