TomTom: We Sends Users Data to the Local Governments and Authorities

The latest in privacy breach — involving devices tracking users location data and sending information back to the parent company comes from GPS maker TomTom, who has announced to their customers that they send travel data, including location and speed, to the local “government and authorities.” According to TomTom’s CEO, this data helps law enforcement to better understand where congestion takes place, where to build new roads and how to make roads safer.

“We’re actively promoting the use of this information because we believe we can help make roads safer and less congested.”

It appears TomTom only sends out anonymous data that can’t be tracked back to an individual user. The flaw in the logic is that since most people start using their GPS at their home, it would be trivial to identify the driver based on a consistent starting and ending location.
