Skype for Business Mac is now publicly available, offer edge-to-edge video and full immersive content sharing and viewing.
This general availability, Microsoft says delivers “a great first class experience for Mac users”, and it also now replaces the ageing Lync for Mac 2011 application.
In addition Skype Operations Framework (SOF) assets updated today help customers plan, deliver and operate new Mac client.
The latest documentation and updated training on the SOF website is available.
Additionally, users can soon take advantage of some new features that are coming in the next few weeks to Skype on Android and iOS, such as a “Calls” tab with one-tap calling of all types including: free Skype-to-Skype audio or video calls, as well as calls to mobile or landline numbers that require you to use Skype Credit.
Purchasing Skype Credit will become a lot simpler too.
This update will also bring an option to leave video voicemails and the ability to keep conversations from being interrupted when one or more participants have to leave. Also, it’s possible now to leave a simple chat message, “all integrated natively into your chat with the person or group you tried to call,” skype writes.
In the end, the team notes, it will continue supporting the ability to receive voicemail (with settings controllable in the Skype account portal). However custom voicemail greetings, email notifications and SMS transcription will no longer be available.
Enhancements to Skype for Business mobile apps on Android and iOS adds new capabilities including the ability to present PowerPoint files in a meeting right from Android or iOS apps by just selecting the file from a cloud drive—faster and with more reliable content sharing approach.
“Once a file is shared, it also becomes available in the meeting’s content bin for other participants to download or present,” Skype explains.
Use the swipe gestures, to easily transition between different slides. Additionally, on Android, files store on the device can also be shared.
Video-based Screen Sharing (VbSS) provides a seamless and more reliable viewing experience on mobile devices, especially if you are sharing animated content such as CAD models.
Integration with cloud storage services including OneDrive, iCloud drive and Dropbox is also available with this update.
The initial setup of VbSS is much faster, while also consuming network bandwidth efficiently.
Further improvements including CallKit integration on iOS are promised as future updates.
Skype Preview app for Windows 10 update adds a few new features for Windows Insiders on the Fast ring. The update version 184.108.40.206 bring new features for messaging such as “a file or an image (uptom 300MB) can be drag into a chat to send it,” and “image previews will be shown when URLs are sent,” as well as “unread message indicators are now displayed in chats.”
The update also improves profiles with features like “call someone directly from their profile, ability to add, remove, or block & unblock people is added as well.” Now, when a user don’t show or have a profile picture, “user’s initials” will show instead.
Setting up preferred camera, microphone, and speaker can also be done right within the app, and calls on Windows phones are now default to loud speaker.
