Siri acquired by Apple gets iPhone personal assistant

A FTC filing revealed that Apple has quietly bought “Siri”. Apple hasn’t publicly confirmed the deal outside of the FTC or mentioned its terms, though the deal gives “Apple the creator of an iPhone personal assistant app that can automatically handle common tasks through searches, such as hailing a cab or buying tickets for a movie at a nearby theater. The deal doesn’t amount to a full, traditional web search engine but is one of the first instances of Apple buying directly into a search business that could pit itself against Google. The latter has some special search features of its own but hasn’t specialized in directly linking its searches to accomplishing tasks outside of relatively simple, experimental projects like Google Shopper for Android. Google Mobile App currently allows voice search, but only as a replacement for generic searches. This puts Apple in even closer competition with Google, as we believe that mobile assistant apps are one of the many ways that search will look on mobile platforms.”
