Renault Fluence ZE – Windows powered Switchable-battery EVs

At Frankfurt auto show, together with manufacturing partner Renault, Better Place has unveiled what’s touted as the “world’s first switchable-battery electric vehicle.” The onboard “AutoOS” software for the Renault Fluence ZE will run on Intel’s Atom CPU and a Windows Embedded operating system, the company says. According to Better Place, infrastructure for its wholly electric EVs will consist of the following: Charging stations, developed in conjunction with Flextronics; “Switch stations,” where robots will replace a vehicle’s depleted lithium-ion battery pack in an automated process said to take only about 80 seconds. Better Place says the lithium-ion battery packs used in the Renault Fluence ZE will last from between 100 to 200 miles per charge.
