Recipe Structured Markup Data Update for Google Assistant & Search

As more people are now using Google Homes’ recipe guidance for step-by-step cooking instructions, Google published new guidelines for recipes to support this voice guided experience.

The updated structured data will improve the visibility of recipes both in Google Search and on Google Assistant on Google Home devices, as it provide users with more information about recipe— as a result sites will now receive more higher quality traffic.

Google said, with the updated structured data properties “You may receive traffic from more sources, since users can now discover your recipes through the Google Assistant on Google Home.”

As a result of this major recipe stchema data change data for recipe publishing sites became invalid since the new Structured Data Testing Tool failed to validate existing data in order to be better compatible with Google Assistant.

Google recommending that sites must now update their Recipe Schema Structured Data to include new schema markup properties recipeIngredient and recipeInstructions for recipes to work on Assistant. Adding, these new properties will enable recipe guidance on Google Assistant with step-by-step instructions for users.

In addition, to ensure users can access recipe in more ways, Google is now recommending the following recipe schema markup properties:

  • Videos: Show users how to make the dish by adding a video array
  • Category: Tell users the type of meal or course of the dish (for example, “dinner”, “dessert”, “entree”)
  • Cuisine: Specify the region associated with your recipe (for example, “Mediterranean”, “American”, “Cantonese”)
  • Keywords: Add other terms for your recipe such as the season (“summer”), the holiday (“Halloween”, “Diwali”), the special event (“wedding”, “birthday”), or other descriptors (“quick”, “budget”, “authentic”)

Failure to use these properties may trigger a warning. To help you add

Additionally, you can add more guidance for recipeInstructions by specifying each step of the recipe with HowToStep property, and sections of steps with HowToSection property.
