GamesIndustry.biz reveal today that sales of the PS3 in Australia have so-far topped 20,000, with TheAge.com also reporting that sales of hardware, software and extras in the country have so far topped 25 million AUD. That’s over 10 million GBP.
The PS3 retails for 999.95 AUD in Australia, with games priced in the region of 99.95 AUD. The Xbox 360, over a four-day period following launch, shifted 30,000 consoles, making comparisons inevitable, and demonstrating that perhaps Sony’s launch wasn’t as muted as early reports suggested.
The 360 was at launch regarded as the fastest selling console in Australia (a record since pipped by the Wii’s 32,000 launch), so it will be interesting to see whether the PS3 eventually tops this figure, especially given the greater availability of units. The 360 has sold nearly one-million consoles down-under at the time of going to press.
