“PowerPoint makes us stupid,” Gen. James N. Mattis of Marine Corps

New York Times has a story on how the U.S. military uses PowerPoint, the ubiquitous Microsoft presentation software which reporter Elisabeth Bumiller says “has crept into the daily lives of military commanders and reached the level of near obsession.” ““PowerPoint makes us stupid,” Gen. James N. Mattis of the Marine Corps, the Joint Forces commander, said this month at a military conference in North Carolina,” followed by the reactions from the top military brass who argue that PowerPoint’s structure in the words of Bumiller — “stifles discussion, critical thinking and thoughtful decision-making.”

A PowerPoint diagram meant to portray the complexity of American strategy in Afghanistan certainly succeeded in that aim.
