PC shipments rose more than 24-percent in 1st-quarter, IDC research

IDC research firm reports that “Worldwide personal-computer shipments rose more than 24% in the first quarter – the PC market continued to show signs of recovering from the economic recession.” Worldwide shipments rose to 79.1 million for the quarter, from 63.7 million the first quarter last year. Growth in US was more modest, rusing slightly less than 17%, to 17.5 million shipments, from 15 million shipments in same quarter last year. “U.S. PC market exhibited encouraging signs of recovery in first quarter,” said said Andrew Hanson. “While part of this growth is a correction from a dismal 1Q09, some of it was driven by new PC refresh projects in commercial markets. This’s in addition to ongoing consumer appetite for more mobile devices as price points remain attractive and multi-device per user environment expands.” HP led the pack globally and in US, followed by Acer in the worldwide market and Dell domestically. Here’re IDC’s charts with more details on vendor results in the US and worldwide:
