Office 2019, Microsoft’s new on-premises version of the Office suite launched with an updated design and a “subset” of features essentially added from Office 365 ProPlus for both businesses and consumers.
It includes updates to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Project, Visio, Access, and Publisher.
So, what is the difference between Office 2019 vs. Office 365?
Office 2019 is for customers that cannot be cloud-connected. It’s basically a one-time release and won’t receive future feature updates. Of course, standard security and quality updates will deliver as well.
In contrast, Office 355 ProPlus is a subscription-based cloud-connected service and includes more collaborative and always up-to-date with new features adding on monthly basis, including innovations in collaboration, artificial intelligence (AI), security, and more.
Office 2019, quite possibly is the last perpetual license product of Office as Microsoft wants users to buy subscription plan on Office 365 and or Microsoft 365, which includes Windows 10 and Enterprise Mobility + Security.
“Perpetual means that you own it forever.”
That’s said, new enhancements in Office 2019 are all that was added to Office 365 ProPlus over the last three years.
Here is a list of features available in Office 2019:
- Improved inking features across all Office apps in Windows, such as a roaming pencil-case, pressure sensitivity, tilt effects, and ribbon customizations.
- Morph and Zoom, SVG and 3D model support, play in-click sequence, and 4k video export are all coming to PowerPoint.
- Excel offers powerful data analysis features, like new formulas, funnel charts, 2D maps, timelines, new functions and enhancements to PowerPivot.
- Microsoft is also bringing focus mode to Word, along with a new translator, and accessibility improvements.
- Learning Tools, like Read Aloud and Text Spacing, make it easier to engage with content.
- Focused Inbox moves less important emails out of the way—so you can get straight to taking care of business.
- Outlook has updated contact cards, support for Office 365 Groups, mentions, a focused inbox and new summaries for deliveries and travel.

IT-centric features in Office 2019 includes Click-to-Run (C2R) modern deployment technology with same enterprise-focused management capabilities as Microsoft Installer (MSI) based products.
C2R also support in-place upgrade when users move from older MSI-based products to Office 2019.
Benefits offered by C2R include “predictable monthly security updates, up-to-date apps on installation, reduced network consumption through Windows 10 download optimization technology.”
Also, it offers an easy upgrade path to Office 365 ProPlus.
OneNote is still free and available outside of Office, regardless of the platform.
Office 2019 is available today to commercial volume license customers, followed by consumer and other business customers SKUs in a few weeks from now.
Microsoft will also release updated servers “Exchange Server 2019, Skype for Business Server 2019, SharePoint Server 2019, and Project Server 2019” for businesses in the coming weeks.
Update: Earlier in September, Microsoft released Mac Files On-Demand, Dark Mode for OneDrive on Mac, Files On-Demand and Storage Sense, and link open receipts for sharing links to OneDrive.
Files On-Demand for Mac lets a user access all their files from Microsoft Cloud, but only download files need be locally stored. This cuts on the storage amount consumed.
Files On-Demand is available to consumer and commercial OneDrive customers, and works across all personal, work, and shared files in Office 365.

Dark Mode support for Mac brings a new dark look theme across all the UI work with all built-in apps in MacOS Mojave. When enabled, OneDrive will switch to new UI across Finder Overlays and the OneDrive Activity Center.
Storage Sense Integration
Available now with Windows 10 October 2018 update, this functionality automatically frees up disk space by moving older, unused, local OneDrive files online-only.
The files though will stay in cloud but placeholders representing those files will remain on device.
