Microsoft is making available several fixes for Windows 10 ‘Redstone 4,’ plus new Windows Server 2019 test builds with a couple of new features.

Microsoft makes available a new Insider Preview Build of Windows Server 2019 to the Windows Server vNext Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) release along side a new build of the next Windows Server Semi-Annual Channel release.

Microsoft is enouraging users to feedback if any server roles or applications stops working or fails to function on the following two: “In-place OS Upgrade from Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2016,” and “Application compatibility.”

The new test build released Tuesday, contains updated desktop experience as well as Server Core now available in all 18 server languages, while Windows Server vNext Semi-Annual Preview The Server Core Edition is available in English only.

In-place upgrade let admins upgrade their existing Windows Server setup to a new version while also retaining all their settings and installed features. The table below shows LTSC versions and editions supported for in-place upgrade:

Another feature included in Windows Server Standard and Datacenter editions is a new job-based orchestration and proxy called, “Storage Migration Service (SMS)” that provides “orchestrated workflow with a Honolulu-based graphical management system, allowing scalable migrations of many servers simultaneously to new targets running on premises or in Azure,” Microsoft wrote.

SMS’ intutive GUI backed by PowerShell automation handles common problems and subtleties of a migration, including in-use files, share settings, security settings, network addresses and names, local security principals, encrypted data, and more.

Storage Replica (SR) enables synchronous and asynchronous block replication of volumes between servers or clusters for disaster recovery. Also, using it you can create stretch failover clusters that span two sites, with all nodes staying in sync.

Additionally, following improvments to SR will be available in preview soon after build 17639:

  • Log v1.1 lead to far better replication throughput and latency, especially on all-flash arrays and Storage Spaces Direct (S2D) clusters that replicate between each other. Just upgrade all servers participating in replication to Server 2019.
  • Test Failover let you now mount a writable snapshot of replicated destination storage. Make sure to have an unused volume and temporarily mount a snapshot of replicated storage for testing or backup purposes.

SR will soon available on Server 2019 Standard Edition as well as on Datacenter Edition with following limitations on Standard Edition:

  • SR replicates a single volume (instead of an unlimited number of volumes).

  • Volumes can have one partnership (instead of an unlimited number of partners).
  • Volumes can have a size of up to 2 TB (instead of an unlimited size).

Starting with this build and all future pre-release builds are now require activation keys during the set up process. Following keys can be use for “unlimited” activations:

Datacenter Edition 6XBNX-4JQGW-QX6QG-74P76-72V67

  • Standard Edition MFY9F-XBN2F-TYFMP-CCV49-RMYVH
  • These builds expires pn July 2nd, 2018, and available to download in ISO or VHDX format. The images are pre-keyed – no need to enter a key during setup.

Windows 10 RS4 Spring Creators Update, which is expected to be available to mainstream users some time in April. Meanwhile, as part of this month’s Patch Tuesday, on April 10 Microsoft has made a new test build 17133.73 of Redstone 4 (RS4) available to the Fast and Slow ring Insiders of Windows 10.

A cumulative update KB4100375 brings in security updates for IE, Microsoft Edge, Scripting engine, Windows kernel, Microsoft graphics component, Windows Server, Windows cryptography and Windows datacenter networking.

    It also fixes follwing issuse:

    • a PDF security issue in Edge
    • an issue that prevents IE from identifying custom controls
