Since 2015, Google is providing users with with features, like Ad Settings Why this ad? and Mute this ad, all inside the Google Account, for easily managing personal information, privacy and security settings has now announced an update that extends these initiatives with greater control and transparency over the ad experience.
In addition, Google is also extending ‘Why this ad?’ to across its services, including YouTube, Google Play, Gmail, Maps and partner websites and apps that show Google Ads.
New Ad Settings
Available since 2009, Google is rolling out an updated version of its Ad Settings, which as Google says makes it easier for users to now better understand and control “how ads are served to them.”
The new Ad Settings, shows all the different factors that determine how ads are tailored” to you at a glance, so you can easily learn about “why you see ads related to these topics,” and decide if you want to remove any of these ads.

Below you can an animation of the different factors that determine how ads are tailored, including: estimations of interests based on users activity while they’re signed in, information added by users to their Google Account, and information from advertisers that partner with us to show ads—like if you’ve visited their site or signed up for their newsletter.

With new Ad Settings, users can now easily turn off some of the interest signals that Google uses for targeting ads. The options are located in the “Personal info and privacy” section of users’ account Ad Settings.
“The ads you see can still be based on general factors, like subject of what you’re looking at or the time of day, or any other factor that is still turned on,” stated Google.
Updated Why This Ad?
“Why this ad?” available since 2011 is a feature tat appears next to ads and helps to learn why you’re being shown certain ads as well as provide access to Ad Settings.
Now going forward this feature will appear in more places on Google services that show Google Ads, including YouTube, YouTube app on connected TVs, Google Play, Gmail, Maps and Search. Additionally, it’ll also appear on “almost all of the websites and apps that partner with us to show ads,”said Google.
