Netflix has enabled streaming of HD content via the Web, which Microsoft’s Windows Media Center software will also bring home to consumers. Netflix previously streamed HD content, but it required a dedicated device, such as a Roku player, TiVo, or a game console like a Microsoft Xbox 360. Now, as of May 18, more than 1,800 pieces of Netflix HD content in WMC will be streamed in 720p to the 25 million WMC users, Microsoft said. They’re also available for Mac users. Microsoft also announced some Windows Media enhancements for U.K., France, and Germany. In UK, WMC users will have access to over 1,000 hours of free full length TV shows, with many shows available in HD. In France, MSN Video will offer more than 15,000 free video titles, including news, sport lifestyle, comedy and documentary clip, with some in HD, Microsoft added. And in Germany, the service will connect to 17,000 video clips. In China, WMC will provide free TV entertainment from China Radio International (CRI), Sina and Sohu in China.
