A Mr Men and Little Miss doodle’s appeard on Google today to celebrate the May 9 birthday of author / illustrator Roger Hargreaves, who turned 76 today.
Charles Roger Hargreaves (9 May 1935 – 11 September 1988) was a British author and illustrator of children’s books, notably the Mr. Men and Little Miss series, intended for very young readers. The books’ simple and silly stories, with bright-coloured, boldly drawn illustrations, have been part of popular culture for over 25 years, with sales over 85 million worldwide in 20 languages. There’re 16 different logos running in all. The logos appear randomly. Reload your page, and you’ll see a different one. Some seem to appear more frequently than others (getting Mr Small to appear took a number of reloads).
In all, 17 of the nearly 100 characters are honored (17, not 16, because two different characters appear in one of the logos).
According to the official Facebook page for Mr Men & Little Miss, the crew is “very excited”:
That’s more than Google’s ever done on one day to recognize something, to my knowledge — and I’ve studied Google’s special logos pretty closely (see Those Special Google Logos, Sliced & Diced, Over The Years).
