Though Microsoft is not participating at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, but the company made its presense with Windows 8 and CEO Steve Ballmer, making a special apperance during the Qualcomm’s CEO Paul Jacobs talk at the Sin City.
Of course, Ballmer praise Windows 8, Windows Phone 8 and Surface RT, saying several times that Microsoft’s first tablet in history is a great product and that “Windows RT devices are the new additions to the family.”
Windows 8 now has more than 1,500 certified PCs and devices — many on display at CES that include convertibles, tablets, all-in-ones, and table PCs.
Nick Parker, corporate vice president of worldwide OEM, penned a piece about how “touch and other new capabilities in Windows 8 are powering the latest hardware innovations coming from their OEM partners” with the video showcasing the new Windows 8 devices shown at CES.
Here’s a look at some standout products:
Samsung Series 7 Chronos provides enhanced processing power with ten-finger multitouch capabilities, allowing people to interact directly with the screen as well as the touchpad and keyboard. With a full aluminum body, the new Series 7 Chronos is packed with Intel quad-core processor with up to 16 GB of memory, up to 1 TB of storage and dedicated 2GB external graphics into a slim chassis that measures just 20.9mm (0.82 inches). The laptop wakes up in as little as two seconds and boots in under 12 seconds.
Samsung Series 7 Ultra Touch offers crisp visuals and powerful sound features. The laptop’s display is brighter and wider than previous models and features a 178-degree viewing angle, making it great for sharing multimedia with friends and family, or work content with colleagues.
Lenovo IdeaCentre Horizon Table PC can easily transform into a 27-inch high-performance desktop to handle whatever productivity tasks users need to do.
HP Pavilion TouchSmart Sleekbook and the new HP Pavilion Sleekbook provide affordable performance in a thin, light package. Powered by an AMD A-Series APU, they feature a 15.6-inch diagonal HD display, 1 terabyte of storage, and exclusive innovations including HP CoolSense, HP ProtectSmart, HP Connected Photo powered by Snapfish, and HP Connected Music powered by Meridian. A full array of ports including HDMI, USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 provide fast connections. The Sleekbooks also include HP TrueVision HD Webcams and HP MyRoom for video calling and sharing photos.
ASUS VivoTab Smart Tablet features an Intel Atom Z2760 dual-core processor for fast and responsive performance. Just 9.7mm thin and 580g light, ASUS VivoTab™ Smart has a 10.1-inch LED-backlit display with a crisp 1366 x 768 HD resolution. IPS display technology delivers 178-degree wide viewing angles and ensures clear and bright images, even when seen from the side. In this video, Jon Berry, a veteran Windows engineer, digs into the new way Windows 8 manages processes to support the brave new world of Windows running on various CPU architectures including ARM and ATOM, which present an interesting set of technical challenges given the need to aggressively preserve energy when running–yet not fully running–while in a battery-powered state.
Jon owns the Desktop Activity Moderator (DAM), which, as the name implies, moderates desktop processes. The DAM is one of several new features in Windows 8 designed to ensure consistent, long battery life for devices that support connected standby.

While on Windows, watch the 7-minute video below showcasing all Windows versions released by Microsoft so far, starting with the old Windows 1.0 and ending with Windows 8, the latest operating system rolled out on October 26.
If you wish to boost the battery life of your Surface RT tablet, there are three different things to do: adjust the screen brightness from the “Settings” charm, disable notifications and turn off Wi-Fi.
“Surface is designed to work between 32°F and 95°F (or 0°C to 35°C). And, it comes with an internal lithium-ion battery designed to go everywhere you go. With connected standby, you’re always up-to-date, and with up to 8 hours of battery life, you can create the next great presentation, email family, or watch videos on a single charge,” Microsoft explains in the FAQ.
Also, Samsung the ATIV Odyssey Windows Phone 8 will go on sale at Verizon Wireless in the “coming weeks.” In other news, Sprint, in a press released filled in a bit more detail of its upcoming Windows Phone 8 device saying it actually planned to launch two Windows Phones on its network by summer–one each from Samsung and HTC.
“We’re looking forward to bringing two new Windows Phone 8 devices by Samsung and HTC to market with Sprint this summer, adding to our strong Windows Phone 8 portfolio,” said Terry Myerson, cvp of the Windows Phone Division. “These devices, coupled with Sprint’s unlimited 4G LTE data experience, will make it easy for Windows Phone 8 customers to have the most personal smartphone experience possible, wherever they are,” Myerson added.
