Microsoft continue pushing Surface RT as a serious competitor to Apple’s iPad.
In a new video, Microsoft showcases how a the Surface RT has a kickstand, USB port, and more compared to the Apple iPad.
Recently in the past two Surface television commercials, the company compared iPad with the Asus VivoTab RT and a Dell Windows 8 tablet–highlighting that RT tablet’s “are thinner, weighs less, multitasking abilities via Snap mode, built-in Micro SD card reader, and comes pre-installed with Office 2013.”
In other Microsoft news today, Xbox 360 continue to maintain for the 30th consecutive month as its top and the best-selling console in the U.S.. Additionally, 140,000 units were sold in June.
Below are the June highlights from NPD include:
- “Total retail spend on the Xbox 360 platform in June (hardware, software and accessories) reached $197 million, the most for any console in the U.S.
- During the month of June, Xbox 360 held seven of the top 10 console game titles including: “Minecraft,” “NBA 2K13,” “Injustice: Gods Among Us,” “Deadpool,” “Call of Duty: Black Ops II,” “Grand Theft Auto IV” and “Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.””
Also, Xbox 360 and Xbox One will also be at Comic-Con International in San Diego this weekend on Saturday, July 20, with a series of events including “The Future of Xbox Gaming Revealed” and “The Video Game Culture of Zombies: How ‘Dead Rising 3’ on Xbox One Kicks Off a New Generation of Mayhem” panels.
Microsoft has also revealed a $900 million inventory write-down for Surface RT because of unsold devices, after slashing the price by nearly $150 on July 18 during its quarterly earnings call.
Microsoft continue saying that write-down completely overshadowed the performance of the rest of the products and services including Office 365 subscription service and Windows Phone plus Android patent licensing as well.
Microsoft’s Q2 2013 financial results revealed a significant growth in demand of Office 365, which is becoming a much more appealing solution for many enterprises across the world.
“We continue to see strong demand for our enterprise products and services, with more and more customers making long-term commitments to the Microsoft platform,” said Kevin Turner. “The growing adoption of our cloud services, including Office 365, Windows Azure and Dynamics CRM, continues to demonstrate our leadership position in the cloud,” he added.
Steve Ballmer said he expects further boost in revenues in the coming months, especially because it’ll soon launch new Windows 8.1 and updates for the Surface RT and Pro.
“We are working hard to deliver compelling new devices and high value experiences from Microsoft and our partners in the coming months, including new Windows 8.1 tablets and PCs,” said Ballmer.
Also, according to reports, Windows 8.1 RTM is expected to hit the market on August 16.
