The Microsoft Exchange protocol documentation published today provides detailed technical specifications for the Microsoft protocols and extensions to industry-standard and other published protocols that are implemented and used by Microsoft Exchange.
“The documentation is designed to describe each protocol in detail as it is used by Microsoft Exchange. Each specification documents technical requirements, limitations, dependencies, and specific protocol behavior,” Microsoft stated.
“The documentation includes companion overview and reference documents that supplement the technical specifications with conceptual background information, overviews of inter-protocol relationships and interactions, and technical reference information.”

Microsoft also made available a second document titled “Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Outlook standards documentation” that describes how Exchange and Outlook support industry messaging standards and Requests for Comments (RFCs) documents about iCalendar, Internet Message Access Protocol – Version 4 (IMAP4), and Post Office Protocol – Version 3 (POP3).
The documentation includes companion overview and reference documents that supplement the technical specifications with background information, terminology, and technical reference information.
