Microsoft and News Corp web pact to delist from Google search index

Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. has initiated discussions with Microsoft over a plan to have media company’s Web content essentially delisted from world’s largest search engine Google. According to Financial Times report, “Microsoft has had discussions with News Corp over a plan that would involve media company being paid to “de-index” its news websites from Google, setting scene for a search engine battle that could offer a ray of light to newspaper industry. Microsoft, which owns rival search engine Bing, has also approached other big online publishers to persuade them to remove their sites from Google’s search engine. One website publisher approached by Microsoft said the plan “puts enormous value on content if search engines’re prepared to pay us to index with them”. Microsoft’s interest is being interpreted as a direct assault on Google because it puts pressure on search engine to start paying for content. “This’s all about Microsoft hurting Google’s margins,” said web publisher who’s familiar with plan.” Microsoft representatives didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
