At the recent Windows Phone 8 developer event in Singapore, Nokia Asia Pacific Developer Relations, head revelaed that “Windows Phone 7.8 had been Released to Manufacturing (RTM) this week and that IE10 will not be the part of this update.”
Microsoft cites the reason for not incuding Internet Explorer 10 in the Windows Phone 7.8, “due to the browser utilizing hardware acceleration and current smartphone hardware is unable to support that feature.” So, those who are currently on Windows Phone 7.5 will get Internet Explorer 9 instead as and when Windows Phone 7.8 update rolls out.
As for the availability, an official Windows Phone Brazil Twitter account earlier this week tweeted that the Windows Phone 7.8 update will be coming in Q1 2013.
Now, according to a leaked slide from a 25-page Nokia PowerPoint deck attained by WPArea.de (via), shows a timeline with Windows Phone 7.x being overlapped by Windows Phone 8. “There we see the familiar Mango –> Tango –> Windows Phone 7.8 progression but there is another box after 7.8 that simply states “Windows Phone 7.x”.”
Recently, we learned that the Windows Phone 7.8 update was set to launch just after the release of Windows Phone 8 devices. But what is more interesting is, it will come before the first set of “Windows Phone 8 updates.” That means, “WP8 will have many general updates over the next few years or it could have numerous smaller updates over the next few months.”
Such a system is already in place as detailed in our earlier post on how over-the-air (OTA) updates work on Windows Phone 8.
Aside from a new Start Screen, apparently Windows Phone 7.8 will not come with a new feature that will be in the Windows Phone 8 operating system. However, an image from some sales training slides from Nokia China was leaked by a Chinese forum it168.com, revealing the following features slated for WP7.8 release. According to the slide, the following new features would be coming to existing WP7.5 phones:
- Different sized Live Tiles
- Bing wallpapers on the lock screen
- New feature to prevent accidental touches to the screen
- Choice of 20 accent colors
- Internet Explorer security upgrades
- Ability to convert MP3 as ringtones
In addition to above features, Nokia Lumia devices will receive following additional new features:
- Sharing of media via Bluetooth
- Ringtone creation app
- Upgraded contacts transfer app
- Upgraded contacts sharing app
Microsoft has yet to official announce the roll out of the Windows Phone 7.8 update.
Microsoft in a new video posted on YouTube shows off how to take screen shots of your Windows Phone 8 screen.
“To take a screenshot on your Windows Phone, just press and hold the Start and Power buttons at the same time. A camera shutter sound will play to confirm you’ve captured whatever is currently on your screen. To find your screenshots, go to the Screenshots album in the Photos Hub,” Microsoft explains.
