iOS 5 Pushed to the Fall After ‘Cloud Service’ Unveiling, Preview At WWDC

TechCrunch is reporting that Apple has decided to wait until fall 2011 to launch their rumored iOS 5 for iOS devices: iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Major iOS upgrades are typically revealed by Apple during February or March then previewed again in early June alongside a new iPhone, then released on or around the new iPhone’s availability date.

The report says we’ll most likely get first glimpse at iOS 5 at Apple’s annual World Wide Developers Conference in early June, and we assume developers will get a preview download at that date. The report is scarce on iOS 5 details but it does claim that it’s a major revamp and it’ll be heavily cloud-based. This should go hand-in-hand with the rumored music locker service from Apple — in addition to Media Stream and Find my Friends. TechCrunch is again expected a new iPad for a fall announcement- that just doesn’t seem likely to us, though.

Here’s what we’re hearing right now:

iOS 5 will launch in the fall and will be a major revamp of the OS.

  • It could well be previewed at WWDC, it just won’t be released then.
  • iOS 5 launch is also likely to coincide with the release of a new type of iPad, which we previously reported on.
  • iOS 5 will be heavily built around the cloud, and we could see several new services launch from Apple that take advantage of this.
  • Yes, one of those’s very likely a “music locker” service. There’s also a fall launch aim for this, during Apple’s annual music-themed event.
  • But much of the cloud stuff will first be talked about at WWDC, Apple’s developer event which’ll take place in June.
  • One of the new “cloud service” elements is likely a “location service” that focuses on finding friends and family members.
  • As we said yesterday, OS X Lion is still on pace for a summer release — some of the new cloud components are likely to be baked into it as well.
