Intel to launch 45nm dual-core notebook CPUs in 3Q ’08

Intel is going to launch eleven 45nm dual-core CPUs for notebooks in the first half of next year, and the company is also planning to launch quad-core versions in the third quarter, according to sources at motherboard makers.

Intel will launch a 45nm quad-core notebook CPU codenamed Penryn QC comprised of two Penryn cores in a multi-chip package. The CPU will adopt Socket P (35mm × 35mm) and have 12MB L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSB and 45W maximum TDP.

Initially the Penryn QC will only appear in the Core 2 Extreme series and most Montevina platform notebooks will not support the quad-core CPU, added the sources.

In an update to previous reports, the five 45nm dual-core notebook CPUs (for the Santa Rosa Refresh platform) which are scheduled to launch in January next year will have the model names: X9000 for 2.8GHz CPU, T9500 for 2.6GHz, T9300 for 2.5GHz, T8300 for 2.4GHz and T8100 for 2.1GHz and be priced at US$851, US$530, US$316, US$241 and US$209 in 1000-unit tray quantities, respectively, noted the sources.

Intel’s 45nm processors (Penryn) will account for 47% of the total notebook CPU shipments in the second quarter of 2008. Of the 47%, Montevina platform CPUs will account for 19%, while Santa Rosa Refresh will take up the rest. For the remaining 53% of the total notebook CPU shipments, Merom processors for Santa Rosa will take 34%, while Merom processors for Napa Refresh will take 19%.

Intel responded to this report in saying that it will launch the industry’s first 45nm processors in November, 2007 but cannot comment on unannounced products and technologies.
