Instagram has just announced a new capability to its Direct messages features that is now capable of helping users to send “voice messages.”
The new voice messaging feature allows people to send an audio of up to one minute in private or in group chats.
This update is now rolling out to the direct messaging section on the iOS and Android apps.
This feature is yet another one that is being borrowed from Facebook-owned WhatsApp and Messenger and comes almost 6 months after the service added video chat capabilities.
Here is a screenshot overview of the new voice messages feature in Direct:
To use the new voice messages in Direct, a user can record their audio notes by simply pressing and holding down the microphone button or icon in any chat.
Once a message is recorded, it can be sent automatically when the button is released by lifting the finger off the icon.
Alternatively, the message can be discarded by sliding a finger over the trash icon or by sliding to the left and dropping it off onto the delete button.
Those users who prefer to o hands-free while recording, Instagram let users lock the microphone.
Simply, pressing on the microphone button will show a little “lock” icon (as seen in the second picture above) floating at the bottom of the screen. Just drag the finger on to it to lock the recording.
Voice Messages in Instagrams’ Direct should now be rolling out to all users worldwide.
