Hyper-V: Testing hosts for processor compatibility for VM migration

In Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V R2, when a running or a saved state virtual machine is migrated to another virtualization server (called “host”), destination server may’ve a processor with different set of features. An os or app that attempts to execute CPU features discovered when vm was started on a “source” machine, but not present on destination machine’ll cause a vm migration failure. R2 includes a capability called “Processor compatibility mode” so that you can avoid situation where vm cannot be migrated due to processor incompatibilities. However, if you don’t want to turn this capability on for each of your vm’s, you can use Virtual Machine Migration Test Wizard (doc) to identify which machines in your environment’re compatible.
