Group Policy preferences debug logging using Windows 7 RSAT

This post explain how to enable Group Policy Preferences debug logging using RSAT. As a refresher, Group Policy Preferences debug logging’s enabled through Group Policy administrative templates. Many customers experienced a problem when trying to enable logging using RSAT and Windows Vista: policy settings didn’t exist. You’ll experience same behavior when using Windows 7 RSAT. Group Policy Preferences administrative template isn’t included with Windows 7; however, its included in Windows Server 2008 R2. Simple solution’s copy ADMX and ADML files from R2 to Windows 7 computer. Note: There’re some subtle differences between Vista and Windows 7 Group Policy Preferences administrative templates—no change in functionality—but many string names’ve changed in ADL file. Don’t try to mix and match ADMX from one version of Windows with ADML of another.
