Google’s Buckyball 25th Anniversary Doodle “Costed Users Money, Helped Retailer in Making Overnight Cash”

Buckyball was first discovered 25 years ago by a group of scientists at Sussex University in the south of England and Rice University, in Texas. To mark the 25th anniversary of the discovery of this specially shaped molecule composed entirely of carbon on 4 Sep’85, Google changed the second “O” in its logo to a manipulatable version of a buckyball for the day. That leading to two unintentional consequences:

First, the doodle caused 100% CPU load on users’ computers, increasing power consumption cost to those users, as well as causing many a browser crash.

….and, second, the doodle send a massive amount of traffic to GetBuckyballs.com, that sells Buckyballs desktoy. That’s because clicking on doodle brought up search results for “Buckyballs”, and GetBuckyballs.com was one on top results, sending over 2,000,000+ unique visitors to the site and generating 10,000 unit sales in a single day. Which translates to more than $250,000 in revenue, according to announcement the online retailer made.
