Google TV Jailbroken on Logitech Revue, Opens the Doors to Developers, Hulu

At the end of Nov’2010, Android developer Howard Harte announced that he would give $1,000 to the first person who could jailbreak the Google TV. Google TV has now successfully been jailbroken using a hardware-software double-team hack. A group calling themselves GTVhacker dev team rose to the challenge, and released a 6-minute video of the their work to prove it (embedded below).

Harte’s says:

“What this means is that we now have a complete Android development environment for Google TV.” The jailbreak has exposed the underlying Android system, which essentially means Android on a TV, complete with the ability to run Android apps.

Don’t expect this hack to be widely adopted by Hulu-loving GTV fans everywhere, however. Jailbreaking Logitech Revue unit involves opening up the box, soldiering some wires onto the circuit board, and then going through a relatively lengthy software hack — not something your average Joe wanting Hulu on his Google TV is likely to manage.

“The most important thing for developers though is that they now have full access to developing for the platform well in advance of Google releasing the tools,” wrote Harte. “Now, it should be possible for Rovio to port Angry Birds […] to the Google TV.”
