Google Reading Level Search Filter On Advanced Search Page

Google has added a brand new search filter option named “Reading level” to its advanced search page named. The purpose of this filter is to give users a way to find content based on your reading level.

To try it out, click “advanced search” to the right of the search box and click in the new reading level section. You can choose from following options:

  • No reading level displayed
  • annotate results with reading levels
  • show only basic results
  • show only intermediate results
  • show only advanced results

If you select “annotate results”, Google will show you all the search results and add labels to the results with if it is basic, intermediate or advanced. You can also quick filter them on the page.

“Sometimes you may want to limit your search results to a specific reading level. For instance, a junior high school teacher looking for content for her students or a second-language learner might want web pages written at a basic reading level. A scientist searching for the latest findings from the experts may want to limit results to those at advanced reading levels,” explains Google.

Right now, this feature is only available for English web pages, but Google doesn’t mention if it uses the Flesch–Kincaid readability tests.

According to Google, less than half of the indexed pages are written at a basic reading level, half of the pages are written at an intermediate reading level and about 2% of the pages are written at an advanced reading level.
