Google Fans Pelted Blurred Houses in Street View with Eggs

Deutsche Welle reports that on Saturday, several homes in the Bergerhausen area of Essen that opted to be blurred were hit with eggs. “Google’s Cool” notes were also taped to their mailboxes. Der Westen reports similarly. Neither gives the exact number of homes involved nor are pictures of the eggings posted.

Street View with Blurred house in Germany

Street View was initially launche in Germany with images of Oberstaufen town and then last week added 20 major cities. Concerns about Street View led Google to allow people to blur their homes before the service went live. About 3% of the households in Germany (2.89% or 244,237 in all) choose to blur their homes.

A spokesperson for the Essen police department said the incident was booked as a case of property damage, although little was damaged.

“We’ll see if there were witnesses,” he told Deutsche Welle. “We don’t yet have any leads pointing to a perpetrator.”

Lena Wagner, a Google spokeswoman said the company “distances itself completely” from people such as the egg throwers in Bergerhausen.
