Google has released three new TV commercials promoting its Google+ social network service. The ads featuring Hangouts with celebrities like the Muppets as well as NBA announcers, Bill Walton, Kenny Smith, Steve Kerr, Spero Dedes and Jon Barry.
Another promo showing Hangouts in action, with kids talking to grandma, a girl telling her friends she’s engaged, New Year’s Eve kisses and other such cheesiness, all complete with an Apple-esque background track.
Google+: Just hanging out together: “Laugh, share news, celebrate, learn something new or just hang out together in a Google+ Hangout. And with Hangouts on your phone, you can drop in from wherever you are. Start a hangout at google.com/+”
The Muppets Rock Out in a Google+ Hangout: “Famously good friends get together in a Google+ Hangout, to rock out and blow off steam”
Google+: Bill Walton And Buddies Watch Hoops: “Bill Walton, Kenny Smith, Spero Dedes, Steve Kerr and Jon Barry watch YouTube hoops clips in a Google+ Hangout. Start your own Hangout on google.com/+.”
Also, note, Google+ now has more than 62 million users, according to Paul Allen, Ancestry.com founder and unofficial traffic analyst for Google’s social network.
Adding 625,000 new users per day, Allen predicts 400 million users by end of 2012.
According, to the revised tracking based on the actual user announcements made by Google on July 13th and Oct 13th:
July 13 – 10 million
August 1 – 20.5 million
September 1 – 24.7 million
October 1 – 38 million (Larry Page announced “more than 40m users” on Oct 13th)
November 1 – 43 million
December 1 – 50 million
December 27 – 62 million
January 1 – 65.8 million (forecast)
February 1 – 85.2 million (forecast).
Because Google has aggressively integrated Google+ into many other Google properties, including its top navigation bar and the OneBox, one would expect a certain baseline amount of sign-ups from among the hundreds of millions of people using other Google products. Most importantly, 700,000 Android devices are activated daily and this will become a very significant source of new users for Google+. That number will also grow next year.
comScore also, reported that Google + had grown to 67 million monthly unique visitors in November, up 2 million from October.
What is really remarkable is that nearly 1/4th of all Google+ users (24.01% to be precise) will have joined in December alone.
Allen says, “If this rate of new signups (625k daily) continues then Google+ will reach 100 million users on Feb. 25th and 200 million users on August 3. They will finish 2012 with 293 million users.”
