CyanogenMod Founder and Android Custom ROM Expert Joins Samsung Mobile, Will Make ‘Android More Awesome’

Samsung Mobile has hired renowned Android developer and the founder of CyanogenMod, Steve Kondik, as a software engineer. The news comes from a Facebook update made to Kondik’s page and no other formal announcement has been made.

Kondik, better known as Cyanogen and the father of popular custom ROM CyanogenMod, recently added Samsung Mobile as his place of work on Facebook and posted updates saying he would be travelling to Dallas and Seattle (home of two major Samsung offices) in the coming days.

CyanogenMod was first released in 2009 and went on to become the most popular aftermarket ROM (with over 500k installs) for Android devices.

Kindik said his side project (CyanogenMod) is not affiliated in any way with his new employer, so don’t go looking for Samsung to dump their TouchWiz UI and replace it with his aftermarket firmware. So it’s unlikely that we’ll be seeing his custom ROMs embedded as official ROMs on Samsung devices. Despite this, his expertise will certainly come in handy for the guys at Samsung Mobile and he mentioned that he will be “working on making Android more awesome”.

Samsung Mobile has been known for their great relationship with Cyanogen and the team. They sent developers of CyanogenMod flagship Samsung Galaxy S II devices to help out the team deliver the custom ROM love to it. The company also have not imposed any strict and unpopular bootloader locking schemes on their range of devices, unlike Motorola and HTC, allowing the community to easily install custom software to enhance or change the stock Samsung experience.

“If feels like just yesterday that I was making videos about rooting a myTouch 3G and Google was sending cease and desist letters to Steve, so it’s great to see how far the Android community has progressed in a few short years. I wish him congratulations and hope Samsung puts him to work as soon as possible,” said Kondik.
