Microsoft’s digital personal assistant ‘Cortana’ gradually expanding its capabilities since its launch in April 2014, Thursday gained another ability to proactively send you suggested reminders on commitments you made in email messages — such as “I’ll send you that report tomorrow” – and then proactively remind you to complete that task, to avoid any slip through.
“Now Cortana has your back. Using machine learning technology developed in partnership with Microsoft Research, Cortana automatically recognizes when you make a commitment in email messages and will proactively suggest a reminder to you to follow through at just the right time,” writes Marcus Ash. “Cortana does all the work in the background making this helpful feature incredibly easy to use.”
Cortana’s suggested reminders currently supports Outlook.com and Office 365 work and school email addresses with support for other email services ‘coming soon’.
The feature will begin rolling out Thursday currently only in the U.S. on Windows 10 with support for iOS and Android coming in next few weeks.
To check this feature out yourself:
- first sign in to Cortana and give communications consent,
- then connect your Outlook.com or Office 365 work or school account through connected services section in Cortana notebook.
- now email yourself a commitment like “I will send you the report by Friday.”
“Cortana will recognize that and saves the details in suggested reminder for you. If you’ve specified a deadline in the email, Cortana will ping you before it’s due and save it in the action center. Other suggested reminders will be in the Cortana home. No need to copy her on the email or change how you do things today, she will adapt to you,” the team explained.
The team notes, the feature since Windows Insider program, also received improvements like “ability to link to email that the reminder is coming from and notifications ahead of a deadline.” Also now improved models even more accurately identify’s commitments made for Cortana’s suggestions, team added.
In the last few months alone, Cortana also gained ability to manage to-do lists and assist with Xbox interactions, and it’ll soon be able to surface on Android lock screens, and help with scheduling meetings. And with new Skills Kit SDK – for which registrations opened this week – the assistant’s abilities will be expanded even further.
