Did you know that 2010 marks the 25th anniversary of the .com domain? A Massachusetts computer manufacturer, Symbolics Inc., was the first domain name registered on March 15th 1985 – five more companies followed suit that year. Two and a half years later, just 100 domains were registered by the likes of Cisco, AT&T and IBM. But despite boasting some of the highest IQs in the world, no-one at those businesses had the foresight to nab pizza.com, which was bought in 1994 for $20 and sold years later for $2.6 million. If Marty McFly from 1985’s Back to the Future still has that DeLorean knocking around, he’d do well to head back and register a few domains.
To celebrate the anniversary, Verisign has launched the Internet Infrastructure Grant Program which’ll award four $75,000 grants this year to projects which aim to strengthen Internet’s infrastructure. To find out more, head over to 25 Years of .com where you can download an application form. The entries will only be accepted until Oct’15th – recipients of the grants will be announced on Nov’30th.
