Codename “Antares” Likely to be Officially Known as the Microsoft Web Hosting Framework

At the Microsoft Hosting Summit in Washington on Wednesday, March 28, Microsoft revealed that they are developing a hosting framework for web apps to work across Windows Azure and on-premise cloud deployments.

Codname Antares

According to a report by MJ Folly, “the framework is codenamed “Antares,” and will likely to be known officially as the “Microsoft Web Hosting Framework” — will allow hosting of web apps created in “many languages and stacks.” And, that the framework works in both public (Azure) and private (Windows Server) cloud scenarios. It promises to offer developers a quick Azure onramp experience and enable partners to setup a fully managed, secure, multi-tenant hosting environment on public or private clouds.”

“The Antares team is changing the game by introducing a symmetrical Azure and on-prem hosting framework for many web applications created in many languages and stacks. We are poised to offer developers a quick and painless Azure onramp experience as well as enable our partner to quickly setup a fully managed, secure, multi-tenant hosting environment on public or private clouds. If this is intriguing, talk to us in the Azure Application Platform team. We are building the Microsoft Web Hosting Framework, a world class offering allowing for massive scale website lifecycle management on the Microsoft platform,” a job posting on the Microsoft website states.

A tweet suggests “Microsoft May Have Big Changes Planned for Shared Web Hosting with Azure Antares.” However, the original tweet (pcitured above) is “no more” available, as Microsoft seems to have deleted the tweet.

MJF further says that Microsoft hinted to this development in its cloud roadmap for 2012, and suggests that the mention of developers being able to set up WordPress and Drupal on Azure without writing code could have something to with Antares.

Speaking of Windows Azure, Microsoft’s “US Cloud Connection” portal hosted on MSDN is now live, which aggregate the Azure-related blog posts.
