Chrome to Phone: Android App and Chrome Extension – Product of 20% Time Spent Coding in the Clouds

This post discuss how an app was written and approved–35,000 feet above the ground.

“The Chrome to Phone, is an Android app and Chrome extension that allows you to instantly send content–like a webpage, map or YouTube video–from your Chrome browser to your Android device.

The Chrome to Phone was written by Dave Burke, Engineering Director, in his 20% percent time during a 12-hour plane ride to Japan–now used by nearly half a million people. Today, more than 475,000 people use the extension, and that number is still growing.

The app was mailed from the flight and was approved by Andy Rubin and Linus Upson, before the plane even landed. With a little help from a developer in Mountain View and a user interface designer back in London, who tidied things up–the open source code for Chrome to Phone was launched at Google I/O just two months later,” revealed Burke.
