Chrome OS slated for December 2010 release, Google says

At Computex 2010, Google’s Sundar Pichai has been talking Chrome OS. Reuters is reporting that Pichai says Chrome OS will arrive earlier than expected. Although it was originally slated for a December 2010 release, Pichai has indicated that Chrome OS will ship this fall. The Chrome system will designed initially to work on laptop PCs. “We’ll be selective on how we come to market because we want to deliver a great user experience,” he said.

Microsoft on Thursday waved off Google’s efforts to develop an open source operating system, saying that software developers would have to create different versions of same app for different brands.

Pichai disputed that contention, saying the similarity in the base core would mean software companies wouldn’t have to develop new version for Chrome. “Chrome OS is one of the few future operating systems for which there’re already millions of apps that work,” Pichai said. “You don’t need to redesign Gmail for it to work on Chrome. Facebook doesn’t need to write a new app for Chrome.”
