Microsoft has hit Google again this time taking on the company’s search algorithm updates called “Panda”, and “Penguin”, announcing that it will soon launching “Chicken.”
“From ice flows to jungles, our industry has embraced wildlife as a way to communicate change. Who’d have expected creatures we thought so endearing would wreak havoc and turn worlds upside down. Between penguins and pandas and honey badgers, the changes have been many. While some changes have been viewed as negative, others were seen as positive. Clearly, one cannot judge the change by its animal spirit alone,” wrote Duane Forrester, Sr. Product Manager, at Bing Webmaster Tools.
Forrester wrote, that after the post, he was asked questions such as “if this was an algo update that was pending.” Or, “was Chicken maybe a code name for a big update we were planning ahead of SMX Advanced?” “Would more animals follow?” “Perhaps Chicken was organic, and Cow might affect Image Search.”
“Fact is, it’s not.
This Chicken cometh bearing a gift,” he said.
Forrester added a video in the post explaining people some common areas they can take action in to improve their product, ranking and traffic including common issues around robots.txt files and sitemap.xmls.
Forrester notes, that the blog used for the video belongs to a worker at Bing, and is a hobby website her and her husband have so close friends can stay abreast of what’s up with their chickens. “There were actually two chickens involved here: Business Chicken, who you see in the video, and Party Chicken, who was lounging in the green room (a crate with popcorn & bourbon handy – OK, popcorn yes, bourbon, no…) in case Business Chicken decided not to play ball. She was awesome, though, I have to say. A real pro,” writes Forrester.
Bing XML Sitemap Plugin 1.0 was released for IIS and Apache servers.
“”Bing XML Sitemap Plugin” is an open source server-side technology that takes care of generating XML Sitemaps compliant with sitemaps.org for websites running on Internet Information Services (IIS) for Windows Server as well as Apache HTTP Server.”
Here is what’s new in 1.0:
- “Automatically ping the search engines after each Sitemap update (currently we ping Bing and Google)
- An improved computation algorithm for the <priority> value that is calculated – Multi-machine merge memory improvements and various other improvements
- Custom installation and data directory at installation time.”
