Users running DPM 2007 SP1 know that Microsoft offer a “Bare Metal Recovery” (BMR) capability through DPM System Recovery Tool (SRT) for Windows Server 2003 machines. However, SRT model of BMR doesn’t work well with Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2, so Microsoft chose to not significantly re-write SRT for those platforms. This technical article outlines the steps of using DPM 2007 SP1 alongside the Windows Server Backup (WSB) utility to provide a supported bare metal recovery of Windows Server 2008.
