4 reasons the New Prince of Persia “beats and doesn’t beat” the original

The late 1980s was a golden age for the PC adventure game, with franchises such as Kings Quest filling floppies everywhere. One of the era’s most memorable titles was 1989’s Prince of Persia, a Jordan Mechner-designed side-scroller that proved influential for its smooth animation and realistic depiction of human movement. In the years since, Prince of Persia has proved a resilient franchise, spawning at least nine sequels and remakes. The latest, called simply Prince of Persia hits stores for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 today. The game essentially reboots the series, placing you in the shoes of an unnamed vagabond prince (of Persia). So how does the new game compare to the 19-year-old original that shares its title? To find out, we spent the past week playing the new game—and replaying the old one.
