2M iPhone 5 Sold in China; MapsOpener Jailbreak Sets Google Maps As Default Maps

Apple has sold over two million iPhone 5 in China, in first three days after its launch on December 14.

“Customer response to iPhone 5 in China has been incredible, setting a new record with the best first weekend sales ever in China,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO.

In other related news, Google last week released the Maps app for Apple’s iOS mobile operating system, that saw 10 million downloads in first two days and became the top free download app in the App Store in “just first day” of its release.

MapsOpener jailbreak app makes Google Maps default app on iOS

Good news, to those, who want to ditch Apple’s native iOS 6 Maps app, can now make Google Maps the default application when they click a map URL or using Siri.

Thanks to a new tweak called “MapsOpener” created by the jailbreak community, that forces maps links to open up in Google Maps instead of stock Apple Maps app.

Once installed, “MapsOpener will open any maps link from a browser in Google Maps instead of the stock Apple Maps app. It even works with links to directions, planning out a route upon opening the link.”

However, there is one caveat, the way Google Maps handling address links contained within the Contacts app–“the stock Apple Maps app does provide the location of an address opened via the Contacts app,” but the Google Maps app doesn’t.

Until, Apple allows its users to select their own default apps for certain actions, you can try this jailbreak tweaks, just head over to Cydia’s BigBoss repo where it can be had for free.

Also, another tweak from Cydia, called “FullForce” for jailborken iPad is making Google Maps scale to the iPad’s full screen without the distortion of the 2x zoom feature–apart from a few elements (such as the sidebar that are not designed for the iPad’s larger display).

And, now for Siri that deafults to Apple Maps, can using a simple tweak made to giving in to the directions with Google Maps instead. “No jailbreak required.”

So, how does it work? Acutally, instead of saying, “Take me to the nearest Best Buy,” tell Siri “Take me to the nearest Best Buy via transit,” adding “via transit” words prompts Siri to open a screen which displays transit apps. Simply click the button next to Google Maps to bypass Apple Maps altogether.
