10 Million Cardboard Viewers Shipped Worldwide, New AR/ VR Tech, Live YouTube TV Announced

This week at the Mobile World Congress, Google sharing a few updates that bring in more ways to watch and play with AR and VR. not just for gaming also for amazing entertainment experiences.

First, Google Cardboard, that was introduced in 2014, as an simple and affordable way to try virtual reality, today “more than 10 million Cardboard viewers are shipped worldwide,” says Google. “There have been 160 million downloads of Cardboard apps on Google Play—and 30 of those apps have more than 1 million downloads.”

Next up, the company notesm, that people are now speding about 40 minutes per week using Daydream, with “six Daydream-ready phones and 100 Daydream apps to explore.”

Moving forward, Google is also introduces today, “Sky VR” joining a lineup that already includes Hulu, Netflix, and HBO.

“Sky app showcases a range of immersive 360 videos, including from Sky’s partners like “Star Wars: Red Carpet,” “Anthony Joshua—Becoming World Champion,” and clips from Disney’s “The Jungle Book”, writes Google.

Tango technology powers devices that help you bring virtual objects into your world, and now three new augmented reality (AR) experiences are available. The Sims app lets you use your phone with Tango technology to travel around the Sims house; Chelsea Kicker puts a Chelsea football player right in your space, so you can take your picture with him or even try to best him at a few soccer tricks; and WSJ AR lets you visualize stock trends.

Google has also announced a new live YouTube TV, which is designed to work on both Android and iOS, enabling you to watch the live TV as well as record and stream with “cloud DVR” your recordings on any device.

YouTube TV will be available initially in the largest U.S. markets, and will expand to cover more cities across the country soon after.
