$1.25 Billion Spent Online in U.S. for Cyber Monday Shopping; PayPal Records 552% Increase in Global Mobile Payment

Cyber Monday reached $1.25 billion in online spending, up 22% versus year ago, representing the heaviest online spending day in history and the second day on record to surpass the billion-dollar threshold, reports comScore.

“Cyber Monday’s 22% growth in sales was driven by an increase in both the number of buyers (up 11%) and the average spending per buyer (up 9%),” revealed comScore.

“The holiday season-to-date has saw $15 billion spent online, marking a 15% increase versus the corresponding days last year. Overall, 10 million people bought online on Cyber Monday, representing the first time on record that threshold has been reached in a single day. The average online buyer conducted 1.9 online transactions on Cyber Monday for a total of nearly $125 in spending,” comScore stated.

In a November 29 blog post, Microsoft’s Bing search team posted some interesting spikes in search terms over the big holiday shopping weekend, including Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

The following data reflects search terms with a higher than normal spike in volume:

“Black Friday 2011 showed search spikes for retail listings including stores like Toys R Us, Best Buy, Target, Old Navy, Macys, Walmart, Home Depot and many more. Searches for consumer electronics spiked up during Black Friday 2011 on Bing including searches for laptops, tablets, flat screen TVs, digital cameras, the iPad 2, and “electronics under $50″. There were also spikes for toy searches including radio controlled toys, Legos and learning toys. Clothing was also a popular Black Friday 2011 search item, specifically clothing like leather boots, heeled clogs, little black dresses, fragrances, Louis Vuitton and dress shirts,” revealed Bing.

PayPal’s Claudia Lombana in a blg post notes “by 11a.m. PT on Cyber Monday, we already saw 514% more mobile payment volume compared to the same time period last year.” Here is a full breakdown of PayPal’s Cyber Monday 2011 shopping data:

  • PayPal Mobile announced a six-fold (552%) increase in global mobile payment volume on Cyber Monday 2011 compared to Cyber Monday 2010.
  • There was a more than four-fold (397%) increase in the number of customers shopping through PayPal Mobile on Cyber Monday 2011 compared to last year.
  • On Cyber Monday 2011, PayPal saw global mobile payment volume more than double (154%) compared to an average Monday.
  • Cyber Monday 2011 resulted in a 17% increase in global mobile payment volume compared to Black Friday 2011.
  • On Cyber Monday 2011, consumers shopped on mobile most frequently between 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. PST.
  • Shoppers in these cities made the most mobile purchases through PayPal on Cyber Monday 2011:
    • New York
    • Chicago
    • Los Angeles
    • Houston
    • Miami
