Yandex, Russian search engine added “facial recognition” technology to its Yandex.Fotki photo hosting service, and will let users tag other people in photos.
Yandex.Fotki is a free photo hosting service with unlimited storage space for users.
Once a person on Yandex.Fotki is tagged a few times, the Yandex system will start to “learn” the person. As the service learns to “know” this person and starts suggesting familiar tags when the user needs to tag new photos of this person. All the user has to do is confirm the tag for it to appear on the photos. People in photos uploaded to the service can be tagged with their Yandex.Fotki account name or with any other name.
Yandex is leveraging Face.com’s facial recognition technology to create a “smart” photo tagging service that powers the Facebook apps Photo Finder and Photo Tagger. Since those apps debuted, Face.com has been “learning” over 120,000 faces each day. Their API is freely available to use.
Also, the Face.com introduced “KLIK,” a real-time mobile face recognition application compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.
“Just download the free app, connect it to Facebook, Twitter or both and voila! You’ll be recognizing friends with your mobile phone in no time (and in real time too),” blogged face.com.
“It’s magic – and we don’t use that word lightly. Share photos on KLIK, Facebook, Twittter, and with friends. If KLIK doesn’t recognize a face – snap a photo, tap “Tag Me” over unrecognized faces to pick a name, and then save the photo (no need to share). The more photos you save, the better KLIK gets,” stated face.com.
You can download KLIK from the iTunes App Store.
